Project of the Year:  "Home & Garden Television 1999 Broadcast Center Rebuild"

Tom Michales - Senior Project Manager, AF Associates, Inc.

In order to accommodate growth, Home & Garden Television (HGTV) expanded their Knoxville, Tn. facility. This expansion included an increase in active networks from one to four (including an increase in transmission capacity.) This project also included the expansion of HGTVs Master Control facility; an increase in on-line storage capacity and construction of new building linking the original site to the parking garage. The additional space allowed the construction of an Internet/Web command center; which became the showplace for the Internet presence of HGTV and its sister companies.

Thomas C. Michales is a Senior Project Manager with AF Associates, Inc. in Northvale, NJ, a broadcast video systems integrator. Since joining AF Associates, Tom has managed several high profile broadcast television projects including the Scripps Networks rebuild in Knoxville, TN; a cable news channel for Time Warner in Austin, TX; and a multichannel satellite uplink facility in Rio de Janeiro. He has been instrumental in the formalization and promotion of project management practices within the AF organization.

Prior to joining AF, Tom was with Sony Electronics for 14 years. He held a variety of positions within Sony, mostly within the professional products group handling sustaining engineering tasks for a variety of system based products. These products included stadium-sized displays, videoconferencing systems, and interactive video systems, and were instrumental in making them technically successful in the US market. Tom also spent three years within Sony's Systems Integration Center as a senior systems engineer and project manager. Noteworthy projects included the systems architecture and detailed design of video entertainment systems for three cruise ships, distance learning systems, and multichannel broadcast systems.

Tom earned his BS in Electrical Engineering Technology (EET) from Fairleigh Dickinson University. Graduate level study includes a Certificate in Project Management from University of California at Santa Cruz, CA. He is a member of the Project Management Institute (PMI), the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) and the Society for Information Display (SID).
